Quarantine Style: How to Maintain Healthy Hair During COVID-19

The global pandemic has been particularly tough on hair salons — and on their clients. After all, 88% of women say their hair has a direct impact on their confidence. And without regular appointments with their hair stylists, it makes sense that these clients might be feeling self-conscious.


We all hope that shelter-in-place mandates will soon be lifted and that Americans can soon go back to work. But getting a hair cut or professional blow-out simply isn’t in the cards right now. At the same time, we know you want to feel good about your appearance and ensure your hair looks as beautiful as possible. To avoid a home haircut disaster (and to ensure your stylist won’t have their work cut out for them), we’re sharing some expert tips on how to maintain your lovely locks while you stay at home.

Put Down the Boxed Hair Color

One of the biggest home hair no-nos, as any hair salon owner or stylist will tell you, is using boxed hair dye. Although hair dye is actually flying off the shelves right now, DIY color is usually a huge mistake. Boxed dye can damage your hair and will rarely come out looking the way you hope. Then, you’ll be stuck with results you hate even more without a way to fix it — and when you finally get back to the salon, you’ll have to spend time and money correcting your error.


We know how frustrating it can be to see those gray hairs pop up or notice your roots growing out. Instead, try some root touch-up spray or wear a hat if you’re feeling really self-conscious. Keep in mind that everyone’s in the same boat and that you most likely won’t be seeing too many people (except in Zoom meetings) as it is. Exercise your patience and don’t do anything rash that you might regret. If you’re itching for a color change, dry out some hair chalk or wash-out color for a fun weekend activity.

Use a Hair Mask or Oil Treatment

If hair color isn’t a problem for you but your locks are feeling a bit lackluster, you might be missing the deep conditioning treatments you receive at your salon. Fortunately, you can buy hair masks online you can use at home to give your hair some TLC. You might even be able to use some natural oils you have on-hand, like argan or almond oil, to add in some moisture without making a special trip to the store.

Don’t Attempt a Bangs Trim or Drastic Cut

Just as any hair salon owner or stylist will advise you to not dye your hair on your own, you should also refrain from any quarantine haircuts during this time. Giving yourself bangs might sound like a great idea, especially if you’re desperate to regain some control over your life. But this can easily go very wrong, so put the scissors down.


You definitely shouldn’t take this time to cut off several inches in length or to buzz your head, either. Making these kinds of decisions during a crisis is never wise. If you’re the type of person who makes frequent changes to your hairstyle, take this time to figure out what you want to have done when you can visit your hair salon again. Alternatively, you could teach yourself some new styling tricks, like fancy updos, braids, or no-heat curls to satisfy your need for change.

Avoid Frequent Washing and Heat Styling

Washing your hair regularly is important, but be careful not to engage in this activity too frequently. The chemicals in many shampoos can cause breakage and can make your scalp drier, which can cause flakes and itchiness. Stick to washing your hair a few times a week for best results.


You may also want to limit your heat styling in quarantine. Since you won’t be going out much, ditch the hair dryer and the curling iron for now and air dry at least a couple of times a week. If you do use these hot styling tools, make sure to use a heat protectant.
